(L-R) Cerulean Nautilus: 10 x 12 x 5 cm Tea Nautilus: 18 x 18 x 8 cm Jade Auger: 27 x 8 x 8 cm | With this piece, I have explored and combined the fragility of seashells with the raw heat of hot glass. | I was first inspired by the contrast between the harsh exterior of sea anemones and the delicate interior of the shell. | After further research I discovered the interior patterns of other shells, the chambers within them, and I felt compelled to explore this idea. |
---|---|---|---|
The pieces are very technique driven. I wanted to replicate the delicate interior structure in a way that defies the method of making. | By using techniques of making rather than surface decoration, it allowed me to explore in depth not only the idea itself, but also my skills as a glass craftsperson. |
Shoal (2017) 57cm x 44cm x 100cm, 300cm height when installed | This piece was a site specific installation piece I designed with The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens in mind. | I spent a lot of peaceful hours in the Winter Gardens. I noticed during my time there how people naturally gravitated towards the Koi pond. | This piece was designed to hang above the courtyard and koi pond located within the gardens. |
---|---|---|---|
From a distance the work looks like a giant koi, with each individual component being a scale. But as you get closer to the piece it becomes obvious that it is a large group of koi, with each component becoming an individual with obvious scale patterning. | In keeping with the fish theme the individual pieces were suspended on fish hooks and line with a traditional blood knot. | ||
